ORANGE culture and tradition were celebrated at the University of Ulster Jordanstown yesterday in an effort to promote greater understanding of the Order’s message.
Organised by the UUJ Orange Society, the exhibition is the first of a series of events being held between now and the centenary of the signing of the Ulster Covenant next September.
The Orange Society is the first of its kind in the university’s history and society chairman Matthew Gray says there are already over 100 members.
Speaking after yesterday’s event, Mr Gray said: “Last year we had some opposition from people within the university trying to block the actual formation of the society.
“There are still some people trying to undermine us but we have had Protestants and Catholics coming in for a coffee and we’ve had a pretty good reception today.”
Mr Gray said Jordanstown was “predominantly nationalist” with a massive GAA presence and added: “We are giving Protestants and unionists their own voice on the campus which has been quite non-existent up until now.
“We also have information on the students’ union website, so we’re getting the message out there.”
