Waringstown Orangeman George Ruddock who is participating in a fundraising cycle from Carrickfergus to Rossnowlagh

Published on Monday 4 July 2011 08:12

A SENIOR Co Armagh Orangeman will have more reason than most to complain of tired limbs following this weekend’s annual Rossnowlagh parade.

That is because George Ruddock will have completed an estimated 180-mile cycle to the Donegal venue prior to participating in the traditional pre-Twelfth march.

The worshipful district master of Gilford, 53, sets off on his arduous cross-border fundraising trek this morning from the harbour steps in Carrickfergus.

The keen amateur cyclist chose the Co Antrim town as his symbolic starting point given it was where King William landed prior to travelling to the Boyne in 1690.

Over the next six days, the father of two will pass through Belfast, Lisburn, Waringstown, Cookstown, Omagh, Kesh, Belleek and Ballyshannon among other towns and villages en route to his final destination.

Mr Ruddock, a member of Ballymacanallen True Blues LOL 2013, then intends to form up with fellow Co Armagh brethren in Rossnowlagh on Saturday afternoon.

Speaking to the News Letter ahead of his mammoth journey, the civil servant said he hoped to raise funds for Orange causes in the Gilford area.

“I thought I would like to do something a bit different that nobody else had done before,” Mr Ruddock said.

“I’ve thought about [the Rossnowlagh cycle] before and I dismissed it a couple of times, but then I thought with some careful planning and by taking it in stages it would become more viable.”

The Orangeman, who is travelling alone, will spend each night in pre-arranged accommodation and will recuperate tonight at his home in Waringstown before travelling on to Cookstown tomorrow.

Mr Ruddock estimates he will not be doing any more than 40 miles in any one day.

He aims to cross the border into the Republic at some stage on Friday.

“I am taking it in fairly small steps,” he said.

“It is an adventure but I’m treating it almost as a bit of a holiday as well.”

Among those to greet Mr Ruddock will be Edward Stevenson, who will be attending his first Twelfth demonstration as grand master.

Up to 50 lodges from Donegal, Cavan, Leitrim and Monaghan, as well as visiting Orangemen are scheduled to take part in Saturday’s Rossnowlagh parade.
Kiwoko Christian Hospital Uganda
KIWOKO hospital is a Christian mission hospital in central Uganda serving a population of approximately 500,000 people, the majority of whom live in abject poverty working as subsistence farmers.

The hospital has strong links with Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1991 through the work of Dr Ian Clarke, formerly a GP in Bangor, Co Down. Over the years these links have been strengthened with churches and other organisations coming on board to support the work of Kiwoko Hospital.

Today, we have a number of staff from Northern Ireland including the medical director Dr Rory Wilson and, indeed, myself.

Recently, the Royal Black Institution made a donation of £90,000 to the hospital. This is a huge donation and one which will allow us to further develop our infrastructure as well as supporting the treatment of patients.

At a time when so many people are facing financial difficulties it is wonderful to continue to witness such generosity.

There is no doubt that their commitment to fundraising has indeed been overwhelming. Thousands of people in Uganda will benefit from this donation and for many it will be the difference between life and death.

On behalf of Kiwoko hospital I would like therefore to thank the Royal Black Institution and their members for their thoughtfulness in raising such a significant sum of money towards the ongoing work of Kiwoko hospital.

HILL walkers heading to the Mournes this weekend might be surprised at what they find on the summit.

A Lambeg drum will be snaking its way up Northern Ireland's highest mountain, Slieve Donard, in aid of a charity which raises funds for African children.

Carrying the drum, which weighs about two stone, will be a band of Orange- men from Banbridge Bible and Crown Defenders.

One of the members of LOL 423, David Watson, said the members came up with the idea of doing "something a little different" and it was agreed carrying a Lambeg drum up Donard was a novel money-spinning idea.

It is hoped the sweat and toil of the 30 members taking part will raise money for the Ghana Appeal, this year's chosen charity of the Order's General Secretary, Drew Nelson.

Mr Watson said: "The ages of the members range from 16-60 and we've been going up Donard for the past six weeks or so to practice. We've got it down to about two hours 10 minutes,
but with the drum we are giving ourselves between four to five hours.
"The drum is being 'stretchered' up to the crest of Donard on a makeshift structure to be carried up by two men, one at each end, and will be regularly rotated during their test of endurance."

When they reach the summit after their test of stamina, the members, about 10 of whom are drummers, will treat their brethren to a musical interlude before the trek back to Bloody Bridge car park.

Mr Watson said: "We plan to play (the drum] when we get to the top and I'm sure there will be ones wanting to play it on the way down. We just hope we don't annoy anyone."
Mr Watson admitted, however, that the weather might be against them.
"The forecast doesn't look too good, but we'll wait and see how we get on."

The Lodge members have already raised over £1,000 in individual sponsorship and hope to at least double that.
The Royal Black institution has raised £85,000 for the Open Doors humanitarian charity fund in southern Sudan.
The money was collected by members of RBP preceptories across Northern Ireland and in the border counties of the Republic.

The charity was established to help poverty-stricken Sudanese people affected by the long-running civil war in the country.

Open Doors is run in conjunction with the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, which has missionary workers in Sudan.

The Royal Black Institution’s Sovereign Grand Master William Logan said his organisation was delighted to designate the project as its charity for 2006.

“We received a tremendous response from our preceptory members over the past year and we know the money is going to a very worthy cause,” said Mr Logan.

Togo Bus Appeal Concert

On Friday evening last a concert was held in Armagh Orange Hall in aid of the Grand Masters Togo Mini Bus Appeal. The evening kicked off with the Markethill Ulster Scots dancers who gave a spirited display of their repetoire which included everything from Sword dancing to Highland Fling. They were followed by the Co Armagh junior Fife & Lambeg Drumming school who entertained the audience with several traditional tunes accompanied by music only the mighty Lambeg drum is capable of. The young players certainly impressed the audience with their skills and it is good to see that because of popular demand, new classes are now being started in Portadown as well as Markethill ensuring the future of this unique instrument.

This was followed by the Kenny Qua duo playing guitar accordians and whistles and flutes. They aired a brand new song about the proud days and sad demise of the Belfast shipyard followed by a tribute to the Ulster 36th division in the haunting air Bonny Wood Green. The announcer then said that Kileen Pipe Band were about to take the stage and the audience waited patiently for the curtains to pull back so we could see them but for a few minuites nothing happened. Then from the back of the hall came the approaching single drum beat. The band appeared and marched in step, single file up onto the stage and as the applause subsided began playing and the audience were soon in no doubt why the band had earned its 2006 world championship title. There was a display of marches reels and jigs and so on it went. Some tunes I recognised like 36th Division Heights of Dergai, Jolly Beggarman, Scotland the Brave, Lass of Bon Accord etc, but as many again as I did not.

There was an interval during which a raffle was held and following which the stage was subsequently taken by Wor. Grand Master Bro. Bobby Saulters himself. He spoke about the appeal for the bus and said that it stemmed from early 1990 when the Orange institution had first donated a bus to our Togo brethren. This they did fitting the vehicle with book shelves to house specially commissioned bibles translated into French as Togo is a French speaking region. They had since recieved a letter from Togo saying that due to the extremely poor roads there this vehicle was coming to the end of a very busy and fruitful life. Parts and repairs were now needed more frequently than was economical. Bro Saulters said that whilst our Togo brethren did not specifically ask for a replacement bus you just knew from the tone of the letter that they would truly appreciate a replacement and that is how the idea for the current appeal began.

The Grand Lodge then was in communications with the Togo brethren and offered them a choice of four makes of vehicle. Toyota, Mercedes, LDV or Ford. They plumped for the Mercedes (incidentally the most expensive) and specified that it was to have 27 seats, a wheelchair ramp, plus a suite of on board computers. He said that following the Orange Tatoo in Bangor Showgrounds a Welsh engineer happened to be in town that day and went to see the Tatoo. When he discovered what the proceeds of the day were being dedicated to, he offered his services to assist in the conversion of the bus. The Grand Master stated that ongoing Sinn Fein IRA burnings of Protestant halls diverted funds necessary for their repairs which could otherwise be directed to good causes like the Togo appeal.

After the interval the concert resumed with the stars of the evening taking the stage namely the Poyntzspass Silver Band. They began their performance with Aces High followed by Disneys Lion King then New Colonial. The Royal Black Perceptory Chapter Male Voice Choir then took the stage and sang four sacred pieces following which Poyntzpass having got their second wind resumed their performance. They also chose a trio of sacred music beginning with Abide with me. The band ended the evening as they began it with a rousing chorus of Kilaloo followed by the Queen.

The compere then reminded the audience that a concert in aid of rebuilding of an Orange Hall in Lurgan was due to be held on the 13th of October in Lurgan Town Hall starting at 8:00 pm tickets £5. The cost of the Mini bus including £5000 shipping will total £35,000. To date the kitty is showing £20,000. By the end of the concert this was up by another £1500 raised on the night. The Grand Master said the target date for delivery of the finished bus is January. A great way for our Togo brethren to start their new year!

Working To Help Others

Working To Help Others

The Order raises tens of thousands of pounds each year through its
collections at church parades and similar functions to assist those in need.

The Lord Enniskillen Memorial Orange Orphan Society has a magnificent record
for helping boys and girls who have been deprived of the love and the
contribution of a parent, through death by natural causes or as a result of
continuing violence in Northern Ireland.

It is the best known Orange charity, but there are others such as the
Belfast Orange Widow's Fund, which is organised by the Belfast County Grand
Lodge.

The Orange Order also gives a special helping hand to families of members
through its funeral fund and, through the work of the growing numbers of
Orange Credit Unions, there is a real incentive for families to plan to
improve their homes and amenities.

The tradition of an Orange helping hand goes back for generations. A perusal
of the papers for the troubled period 1920-22 shows special efforts by the
Orange Order to help distressed Protestants, including many from Eire, who
had lost their homes because of the terrible strife in the country at that
time.

Again, during the Ulster troubles of the past 30 years, when many families,
especially in Belfast, were dispossessed and had to move, the Order was
prominent in alleviating hardship.

All this is well documented and is recognised by many members of the general
public.

Not so well publicised are the many efforts by Orangemen and their Lodges in
helping the local community and not in any narrow parochial sense.

When brethren in Togo, which has a strong Orange movement, were looking help
in purchasing a vehicle to carry out social and medical work in the interior
of that country, Lodges throughout Ireland gave generously and succeeded in
purchasing a custom built vehicle.

Take another individual case. Bro. Brian Mitchell, from Belfast has done
magnificent work in recent years in raising funds to provide holiday breaks
for under-privileged children.

District Lodges also do fine work in helping worthy causes and an example of
this was provided in Markethill when a sponsored walk was organised to
provide money for one of the units at Craigavon Area Hospital.

The brethren of both parts of Ireland have provided money to help specially
deserving charities south of the border, including a children's home at
Greystones, and for the Adelaide Hospital, the only general hospital with a
Protestant ethos in Eire. One could go on and on, and it is sufficient to
stress that this sort of thing is happening throughout Northern Ireland and
Eire on a daily basis.

Black preceptories aid heart campaign

The Northern Ireland Chest Heart and Stroke Association made a stunning start yesterday to it`s 2003 Have a Heart appeal with acceptance of a £60,000 cheque from the Royal Black Institution. The donation from preceptories in Northern Ireland and the Republic is the largest one-off amount the association has received apart from legacies.

The charity launched its YOUNG@HEART campaign to save children from heart disease, setting a target of £100,000 for the year. Chief executive Andrew Dougal thanked the members of the institution. The Blackmen`s cheque was handed over by William Logan, Sovereign Grand Master of the Royal Black Institution (Imperial Grand Black chapter of the British Commonwealth), at Belfast City Hall in the presence of the High Sheriff Councillor Margaret Clarke.

Mr Logan said: "Our objective in raising this money was to benefit the entire community. We are delighted to play a part in this worthy campaign to protect the young people from the ravages of heart disease, which has claimed so many lives in Northern Ireland."
*Orange leader calls for backing to help victims*

ORANGE Order Grand Master Robert Saulters has urged members to give
generously to the tsunami appeal to help those who have been left
homeless and bereaved.

He said: "Orangemen and their families, as well as lodges across
Ireland, give to charity on a regular basis and I know that many have
already given to the appeals surrounding this terrible disaster.

"I would appeal for individual Orangemen and Orange lodges to support,
this call and do what they can to help alleviate the great distress in
the various communities affected by the disaster."

Mr Saulters said that anyone who watched the television coverage of the
disaster and its aftermath since Boxing Day would be filled with
sympathy and compassion for the people in Asia.

"This tragedy has touched the hearts of people across the world, and our
deepest sympathy as an Orange Institution goes to those who have lost
loved ones, and, particularly, the children who have been orphaned and
left without close family support at this sad time.

"As we all know, it will be a long time before the necessary
infrastructure is restored to the area and all help which can be given
for both the short term and long term should be forwarded to one of the
disaster appeals."

Orange Order Gets "Flame Of Hope" Award
6 June 2004

The Orange Order has been given a national "Flame of Hope" award for raising a staggering £124,000 on behalf of Cancer Research NI.

At a ceremony at the Le Meridien Hotel, London, on Friday (4 June) the Oustanding Achievement Award was presented to the Order by Cancer Research chairman Baroness Hayman in recognition of what was the biggest ever donation from a single organisation to the charity in Northern Ireland.

speaking after the ceremony the Order's Grand Master, Robert Saulters, said: "Although individual Lodges have always raised money for both local and national charities, the Grand Master's Charity Appeal on behalf of Cancer Research NI was the first time we've organised a concerted fund-raising drive.

"The response was incredible, Orangemen all over Northern Ireland, from Belleek to Bangor, really threw themselves into the appeal. Over the year I travelled to just about every corner of the Province to pick up cheques or open events, and I am really proud to receive this award on behalf of all those who so tirelessly raised money".

More than a hundred guests from all over the UK attended the awards lunch at which individuals and organisations in fifteen different categories were honoured for their contributions to the fight against cancer.

Orange Order gives hospice £14,000 boost

THE Orange Order in Londonderry has given £14,000 to the Foyle Hospice, which is based on ground once owned by it. All of the lodges under the City of Londonderry Grand Orange Lodge held fundraising events throughout 2005.

Appeal co-ordinator Colin Campbell said yesterday: 'There was a vote on which charity should benefit from the money raised and it was a unanimous decision that it should be the Foyle Hospice.

"The hospice is a great charity and because they originally bought the land from the Orange Order it made it even more appropriate. "The 30 different lodges in Londonderry and Donegal all did their bit so there was a string of activity going on throughout the year." Dr Tom McGinley, director of the Foyle Hospice, said: 'This highlights the cross-community support that the hospice gets and we have always said that if it was not for this cross-community support we could not survive." Fundraising events included dances, flag days, a parachute jump and a sponsored cycle.

His dedication to voluntary work was recognised by the Orange Order on Saturday when he won the Community Involvement
The Scottish Orange Home Fund is the only registered 'Orange' charity in Scotland. Originally the Ladies Association Home Fund, the idea conceived many years ago when a group of Orangewoman returned from a very successful trip to Canada filled with admiration for the provision that Canadian Orangemen and Women made for their senior members. So impressed were they with what they saw and so filled with enthusiasm that they started their own fund raising campaign with some form of residence for our elderly members as their goal. The Ladies Association and these women in particular worked tirelessly for many years and raised many thousand of pounds during that time alas soaring property costs and other financial constraints saw their dream getting

further and further away. In 1980 they joined forces with the male section of the Grand Lodge, became registered as a charity and so was born the Scottish Orange Home Fund as we know it today.

This beautiful "Swiss style" chalet is situated at Seaton Sands Holiday Village near the fishing village of Port Seaton on the East Coast not far from the City of Edinburgh. The accommodation comprises two twin-bedded rooms, lounge area, kitchen, bathroom and veranda where you can take in the sun. There are many on-site facilities e.g. Swimming Pool, Social Club, Shopping Area and good transport to nearby towns of Musselburgh, Tranent and North Berwick as well as regular buses to the Capital City.

Throughout the Holiday season (April to October) the chalet provides a well earned and much appreciated holiday for around 120 of our senior members.

As a charity, the Scottish Orange Home fund finds great difficulty in competing with so many National charities today but the Ladies Association and its member Lodges continue to be their principle source of funding.

Orange Charities

The Grand Orange Lodge of British America Benefit Fund

Better known as "Orange Insurance" was founded in 1881 and established for the purpose of assisting lodge members, their spouses and independent children in time of need.

Lord Enniskillen Memorial Orange Orphan Society

The Society was founded in 1888 to provide financial assistance to the orphans of deceased brethren and sisters.

Orange Foundation

US lodges provided unemployment insurance, death benefits, and care for the elderly and for widows and orphans. In 1902, the Orange Home was founded at Hatboro, Pennsylvania, and, for almost a hundred years, it provided shelter and support for those in need. The Orange Home continued as a retirement center until 1996, when the Order sold it as a going concern to a large church-related organization. The proceeds from the sale were used to establish a charitable trust, known as the Orange Foundation. This is administered jointly by the Loyal Orange Institution, and the Loyal Orange Ladies Institution. Income from the Foundation is disbursed to a number of qualified charities.

Ladies Orange Benevolent Association

Founded in 1894 to provide women with an opportunity to actively support Orange Principles and the exercise of benevolent activities.

Loyal Orange Orphan Society Of England

The Society was inaugurated in July 1920 under the auspices of the Grand Orange Lodge Of England, as a "War Memorial" to the Brethren who gave their lives for others. The first patrons being Her Grace the Duchess of Abercorn, and the Rt Hon. Sir Edward Carson, M.P. The Society was established for the benevolent and charitable purpose of affording support to the children of deceased members of the Loyal Orange Institution of England . However, since the Society obtained charitable status in March 1998 from the charity Commissioners for England & Wales, the Society has endeavoured to help and assist not only other children's charities but also other well deserving causes.

Orange Home at Indian Head
The home operates under the auspices of The Orange Benevolent Society in the Province of Saskatchewan and was founded in 1923 operating as an orphanage for members and non-members children.

McCrea Memorial Trust

The Trust was formed in May 1964 and provides holiday accommodation primarily for members of the Junior Orange Association with outside youth organisations being considered for vacant/unused weeks or weekends.
Chapter of the Adelaide Hospital Society

The brethren of Dublin and Wicklow are affiliated to the Adelaide Hospital Society. Since the amalgamation of the Republics last remaining Protestant hospital (The Adelaide) into a new state of the art Hospital in Dublin. We consider supporting this society an important way of maintaining the continuation of the Adelaides Protestant ethos in the new Hospital. Unfortunately here in Ireland most hospitals even though they are funded by the tax payer are controlled by a Roman Catholic ethics committee and are usually adorned by the trappings of the Church of Rome. In-spite of the good health care given to all, this adornment is often offensive to many Protestant and others.
